In Xalapa, there’s a small shop that’s over 100 years old, and despite the rise of large chain stores, it has adapted its product offerings to continue serving its customers. Xalapa Antiguo, a group of historians specializing in events in the capital city, provides details about this establishment.
It’s the La Vaquita dairy and creamery, located at 13 Clavijero Street in downtown Xalapa. Although it specialized in selling dairy products for many years, it now also operates as a small grocery store.
La Vaquita was founded in 1920 by Rafael Jiménez, who ran it until the 1950s, according to Xalapa Antiguo. The business was then passed on to brothers Moisés and Luis Bretón, who owned it for about 10 years before being managed by Alfonso Vázquez Hernández, a teacher, since February 6, 1969.
“The business passed into the hands of Alfonso Vázquez Hernández, a teacher born on August 3, 1940, in Paso de Ovejas, son of Albino Vázquez, a farmer and papaya producer,” recounts Xalapa Antiguo.
Alfonso Vázquez married María del Socorro Cuevas Escobar, born in Naolinco on March 26, 1942. She owned another store, also still operating, called La Naolinqueña, located at 26 Altamirano Street.
Alfonso Vázquez’s children formally took over the management of La Vaquita after he had run it for 37 years. Rafael Vázquez Cuevas continues to operate the store to this day.
