Vehicles circulating without license plates in San Luis Potosí
San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí. – The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) of the State reported that there are no valid permits for vehicles to circulate without license plates and circulation cards. As of December 17, 2024, these permits will no longer be officially recognized, generating the need to regularize the situation before the state Ministry of Finance.
The SSPC announced that the documents issued by the municipalities lack legal support, since no agreements have been signed between the State Government and the municipalities for their issuance. Despite this, numerous stores are operating in the city that process provisional permits, which are nicknamed “as valid by their vendors, although they lack a legal basis.
The head of the SSPC, Jesús Juárez Hernández, underscored the urgency of the issue, clarifying that the municipal presidencies must establish the necessary agreements for the issuance of these permits. However, to date, no progress has been made in this process, which prevents the creation of a legal mechanism for the regulation of temporary permits.
In San Luis Potosí, there is a proliferation of businesses that offer provisional permits to circulate without license plates, with prices ranging between 140 and 150 pesos. They assure that these permits, which include a QR code and an official stamp, are valid nationwide. Although the authorities have tried to regulate this practice, the reality on the streets shows that these businesses continue to operate unchecked.
According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the vehicle fleet in San Luis Potosí exceeds 1.6 million units, which has led the local government to implement free license plate programs. Since 2021, more than one million license plates have been delivered, with considerable progress in the regularization of the vehicle registry.
The procedure to obtain license plates and a circulation card is carried out before the Ministry of Finance and its modules. Requirements include government-issued ID, proof of address, and a vehicle invoice. The state authorities have made it clear that, although provisional permits existed, they are no longer valid and the corresponding regularization must be carried out to avoid sanctions.
