Rain returns to much of Sonora at the start of this week

The State Civil Protection Coordination reported that the influx of moisture and an upper-level trough caused light rain and winds exceeding 60 km/h in central, northeastern, and eastern Sonora.

Winds exceeding 60 kilometers per hour and light rain characterized the weather conditions in the central, northeastern, and eastern regions of Sonora on Monday, February 9.

The State Civil Protection Coordination (CEPC) explained that these effects resulted from a cyclonic circulation in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere, which interacted with an upper-level trough and the constant influx of moisture generated by the subtropical jet stream. This system caused a slight drop in temperatures and strong wind gusts that required preventive monitoring by state authorities.

The state agency based its assessment on an analysis of information provided by the National Meteorological Service (SMN) and official sources in the United States. According to the technical report, the weather phenomenon maintained unstable conditions in the upper atmosphere, which facilitated the development of cloud cover and isolated showers in municipalities in central and mountainous Sonora. The State Civil Protection Agency (CEPC) recommended that citizens take extreme precautions due to wind speeds, especially in open areas and on highways in the northeast.

The state capital, Hermosillo, recorded a minimum temperature of 16°C with 50% relative humidity at dawn. Civil Protection estimated a maximum temperature of 33°C for the city, under partly cloudy skies. A 40% chance of precipitation was noted for the day, accompanied by average winds of 10 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 40 kilometers per hour. This humidity represented a significant change compared to previous days in the central part of the state.

In southern Sonora, Ciudad Obregón dawned with a minimum temperature of 16°C and a high relative humidity of 75%. The official forecast indicated a high of 31°C and a 60% chance of rain, making it one of the regions with the highest potential for precipitation this Monday. Similarly, Navojoa recorded a low of 17°C with 70% humidity; the meteorological authority predicted a high of 30°C and maintained the alert for a 60% chance of rain and cloudy skies for much of the day.

Meanwhile, the border municipalities experienced diverse conditions:

Nogales: Recorded a low of 7°C and a high of 25°C with mostly clear skies and a 0% chance of rain.
Agua Prieta: Reported a low of 7°C and a high of 24°C with clear skies and only a 10% chance of rain.
San Luis Río Colorado: Started the day at 13°C and reached a high of 31°C under clear skies.

New Winter System
A new winter system will enter the state of Sonora between February 12 and 14, bringing a further drop in temperature and additional precipitation. The State Civil Protection Coordination pointed out that this phenomenon will mainly affect the northern region of the state, where significant wind gusts and intense cold conditions are expected toward the end of the week.

This advance warning aimed to allow residents of the border region and the mountainous area to prepare the necessary protective measures to avoid respiratory illnesses or weather-related incidents.

In the port of Guaymas, a minimum temperature of 17°C and 70% humidity were recorded, with a projected maximum of 27°C. The State Civil Protection Coordination (CEPC) reported a 35% chance of rain for the coastal area, where winds maintained gusts of up to 40 kilometers per hour.

State authorities reiterated their call to stay informed through official channels, as the interaction between the trough and the subtropical jet stream continued to generate sudden changes in local visibility and temperature conditions.
