The governor of Veracruz, Rocío Nahle García, witnessed a motorcycle accident while traveling on the Boca del Río-Medellín highway, near the town of Paso del Toro. Locals urged her to stop and intervene so that the injured could receive immediate medical attention.
According to witnesses, around 8:30 a.m., a motorcycle lost control and struck a minor and her mother as they were walking to school.
At that moment, they noticed the convoy escorting the governor and immediately asked for her assistance to get them to a nearby hospital.
“The governor has four SUVs, but she can’t send any help,” “There was an accident, Governor,” residents can be heard saying in a live broadcast on social media.
Nahle García got out of her SUV and ordered an ambulance to be called so that the mother and daughter could be taken to a private hospital near the accident site.
“Call an ambulance and have them take her to Covadonga (a private hospital). They should come from Covadonga, it’s the closest one. Don’t move the girl, don’t move her,” the Governor said as she witnessed the incident.
Given the situation, the residents took advantage of Nahle García’s presence at the scene and the context of the accident to demand that speed bumps or a pedestrian bridge be installed in the area, as it is a pedestrian crossing.
They added that streetlights are also needed, as it is dangerous to cross at night due to the darkness and the constant flow of traffic on the highway that runs through the town.
“This isn’t the first time this has happened. This crossing is a pedestrian crossing because there’s a school and a kindergarten right next to it,” said one of the residents.
“It’s very dark here at night. Please put in some streetlights,” added another person at the scene.
The mayor pledged to build a pedestrian bridge at the site and to address the community’s needs, for which the residents expressed their gratitude.
