Chetumal, February 10.- The usual tranquility of the Mahahual boardwalk was abruptly interrupted this afternoon after a group of armed men intercepted three motorcyclists and deprived them of their liberty in the middle of the tourist area, at the height of the lighthouse, generating alarm among residents and visitors.
According to information collected, the victims were riding motorcycles when they were hit by several unidentified trucks. The aggressors blocked their way and, after subduing them by beating them, forcibly put them in the vehicles and then fled in the direction of the federal highway. The motorcycles were abandoned at the site, which confirmed the violent intervention and caused witnesses to request immediate help.
After the citizen report, the authorities of the Mayor’s Office of Mahahual requested the support of security corporations, which resulted in the activation of the so-called “red code”, as well as the deployment of operations in different parts of the town. Police elements installed screening filters at the entrance and exit of the town with the aim of locating the alleged perpetrators and locating the people deprived of their liberty.
However, the investigation faces difficulties due to the lack of direct information from potential witnesses. According to versions collected at the scene, the fear of reprisals has generated an atmosphere of silence among merchants and residents, who avoid providing information that could contribute to the search or the identification of the aggressors.
Although so far there is no official confirmation of the motive for the event, it is unofficially inferred that the case could be related to recent criminal events and arrests made in previous weeks in the Costa Maya region.
