After Clara Brugada, Mexico City’s mayor, met with Víctor Velázquez, sporting president of Cruz Azul, several rumors surfaced regarding potential sites and areas where the team could build its stadium, one of them being Bicentennial Park.

In response, Brugada Molina denied that Cruz Azul has authorization to occupy space within the park for its stadium. During a press conference held on February 10, the mayor clarified that there is no authorization or possibility for the Cruz Azul management to build their stadium within the park, which is located on the border of the Azcapotzalco and Miguel Hidalgo boroughs.

“Bicentennial Park is a large space, a green area, currently a cultural space, and the City Government will in no way authorize any project other than cultural ones, projects that benefit the population,” she explained.

The Mexico City mayor explained that Cruz Azul is looking to build its stadium in the capital, but not in Bicentennial Park.
Cruz Azul wants to build its stadium in Mexico City, Clara Brugada reveals.
The mayor insisted that Bicentennial Park is a space for the sporting and cultural activities of the city’s residents, so she categorically denied that a soccer stadium for Mexico’s First Division could be built there. She considered it a mistake to approve the project.

“Bicentennial Park, as of today, is in the hands of the federal government so that it continues to be a great park for the public, with recreational and cultural activities. As such, it would be a mistake to accept another project that encroaches on these uses. It’s a lie that it will be designated for any other project.”

However, she confirmed that in the talks she has had with the Cruz Azul team, there is genuine interest in having the authorities approve the project to build their stadium within Mexico City. Clara Brugada added that talks are ongoing, although she didn’t reveal details of her latest meeting with Víctor Velázquez, stating they will await the outcome of negotiations with the club’s management.

“In due course, we will announce the alternative, location, and method… Cruz Azul wants to build a stadium in Mexico City, yes, that’s fine. They will have to submit proposals that will be analyzed to ensure they don’t negatively impact existing facilities for the city.”

The possibility of Cruz Azul finally having its own stadium in Mexico City resurfaced after a recent meeting between the club’s president, Víctor Velázquez, and the Head of Government, Clara Brugada. The meeting, which also included officials from the Secretariat of Planning and Territorial Development, points to potential progress toward a long-standing aspiration of the institution.

The Cruz Azul management believes that a home stadium would guarantee future stability. Following the conversation, both leaders promised via their social media accounts to announce “good news” to the fans in the near future, although they did not specify timelines or locations.

The release of official photos of the meeting heightened anticipation among supporters and sparked speculation about the progress of the negotiations. According to the photos and messages shared by the Mexico City mayor, the meeting was “very productive.” However, public statements emphasize caution and have not yet confirmed either the start of construction or the final selection of the site.
