The secretary stressed that Baja California and Sonora lead the cases nationwide, along with California and Arizona in the United States.
Mexicali, B.C.- During the year 2025, Baja California registered 155 positive cases of rickettsiosis, of which 60 people died, reported the Secretary of Health of Baja California, Adrián Medina Amarillas, who recognized that this disease continues to be a serious public health problem at the state level and not exclusive to Mexicali.
The official explained that rickettsiosis has a high mortality rate, since approximately half of the patients diagnosed do not manage to overcome the disease, mainly when it is not detected and treated promptly.
In contrast, he pointed out that so far this year, no deaths have been registered, and only about five positive cases have been detected, which received immediate medical attention, which allowed complications to be avoided.
He added that the number of deaths recorded in 2025 is similar to that of 2024.
Early detection is key
Medina Amarillas stressed that the key to reducing deaths is early detection, which is why constant training and awareness work is maintained in doctors’ offices, pharmacies, private hospitals, and emergency services, so that health personnel consider rickettsiosis in patients with fever from high-risk areas.
Likewise, information and cleaning campaigns continue, as well as fumigation actions to eradicate the transmitting tick.
Finally, the secretary stressed that Baja California and Sonora lead the cases nationwide, along with California and Arizona in the United States, so binational coordination is maintained to address the problem, as it is a disease that does not respect borders.
