After the United States Department of State issued a security alert for its citizens in Mexicali, Baja California, for Tuesday, August 25, Canada also reiterated the warning.
The Canadian government referenced the U.S. alert for Mexicali: “If you are there, avoid government buildings and seek shelter in the event of an incident.”
In addition, the Canadian government shared a map of Mexico urging people to exercise increased caution based on levels of crime and kidnapping.
For Baja California, the Canadian alert is shown in yellow, indicating that travelers should exercise a high degree of caution.
“The U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued the following security alert on August 24, 2026: ‘Due to information regarding threats, U.S. government activities in Mexicali and travel to that city have been suspended on August 25,’” Canada stated.
It reiterated that anyone in Mexicali should avoid government buildings and seek shelter in the event of an incident.
Sheinbaum: “There is no specific issue” regarding the U.S. alert
President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the Security Cabinet would provide information regarding security in Baja California after the United States Department of State issued an alert concerning a possible threat in Mexicali for August 25, leading to the suspension of government activities for its citizens.
“The Security Cabinet was going to provide information. There was an alert about the possibility of a criminal group there. It was not confirmed, and based on information from its own agencies, the U.S. Embassy issued an alert. And I believe the governor also said something; she also said that she was monitoring what might happen in Mexicali. And the Security Cabinet mentioned that they would remain attentive, but there is no specific issue,” she said.
During her morning press conference on Tuesday, August 25, at the National Palace, Sheinbaum said that during the daily meeting she holds with security authorities, she had not been informed of any specific red flag in Mexicali or what exactly the alert issued by the U.S. government concerned.
Security authorities report no specific risk in Mexicali
Sheinbaum stated that there was no additional information about what the alert might involve, emphasizing the need to remain attentive and maintain vigilance in Mexicali.
On Monday night, the U.S. Department of State warned that, due to “information regarding a threat,” government activities and travel to Mexicali had been suspended on August 25.
It also instructed its citizens to avoid all government buildings in Mexicali, seek shelter in the event of an incident, notify friends and family of their security situation if an incident occurred, follow the instructions of Mexican authorities, monitor local media for updates, and remain alert, although it did not specify the nature of the warning.
