The Guaymas-Chihuahua highway, it is expected to attract visitors with high purchasing power from Chihuahua and Texas.
By 2026, Sonora has projected an annual growth of around 8.1% in tourism at the rate we are taking,” said the state Secretary of Tourism, Roberto Gradillas Pineda, in an interview.
“Sonora registers a remarkable tourist growth, with an increase of 9% in the arrival of visitors compared to the previous year, exceeding 2.5 million tourists,” authorities detailed during the inauguration of Casa Sonora, at the headquarters of the federal Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) in Mexico City.
“At Hermosillo International Airport, we have been beating the historical records of more than 2.2 million visitors arriving at the airport for 3 consecutive years, and at Ciudad Obregón International Airport, which is the second with the highest passenger reception capacity, in 2025 it increased by 20% to reach 530,000 passengers,” Gradillas said.
In the state “the Guaymas-Chihuahua highway is being developed, we are trying to emulate the great result that the Durango-Mazatlán highway had, with the purchasing power of Chihuahua and Texas, which do not have a beach. Chihuahua beach is going to be Sonora, it’s going to be San Carlos, it’s going to be Guaymas, and we’re going to make the most of it.”
“It is a road that for many years was longed for by our state, and we are sure that it will provide very important results.”
For fiscal year 2026, 1,339 million pesos will be allocated to emblematic urban development projects that will boost the tourism sector, such as the modernization of the Bahía de Kino highway in the Hermosillo-Miguel Alemán subsection, with an investment of 500 million pesos.
Likewise, the development of coastal infrastructure continues with the second stage of the Malecón and eastern access to San Carlos in Guaymas, which will have 200 million pesos, and the works of the Malecón and roads in El Cochórit Beach, Empalme, with 80 million pesos for its second stage, according to the Expenditure Budget.
These projects are part of the total public investment budget of 3,943.7 million pesos, which finances 452 works in the 72 municipalities of the state; Approximately 38% of this investment will be covered by long-term financing.
“We have made a very important recovery of the historic centers of main cities such as Hermosillo, Guaymas, Ciudad Obregón; the municipal market of Hermosillo, the most relevant, with the greatest history of our capital city; boardwalks that generate family spaces for recreation, such as in Huatabampo, on the beaches of southern Sonora, in Empalme, San Carlos.”
This is on the instructions of the state government, in charge of Alfonso Durazo, “he knows the potential that Sonora has, so there is a very important investment,” he added.
