According to the environmental organization Sélvame MX, a Collegiate Court granted a definitive suspension of construction work on Section 5 of the Maya Train.

The ruling orders federal authorities to take action “within their jurisdiction regarding verification, inspection, conservation, and environmental protection.”

It also orders the Deputy Attorney General for Natural Resources of the Federal Attorney General’s Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa), and the General Directorate of Crimes, Commutations, Complaints, and Grievances of the same institution, to implement the corresponding measures regarding the construction on that section of the railway project.

Section 5 of the Maya Train, which runs from Cancún to Tulum, has been the most controversial part of the project due to its passage through the jungle and cave systems of Quintana Roo. Sélvame MX stated that they are grateful to their collaborators and the community for their continued support in this fight to preserve our environment. “Together, we continue working for a more sustainable and responsible future,” the organization stated.

Experts have warned of the potential collapse of the elevated Maya Train line between Cancún and Tulum, as it is supported by 7,000 piles built on porous karst soil in the caverns of cenotes. They also criticize the idea of using freight trains on the line given this risk.
