The final nail in the coffin for FIDECINE was driven by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2020. But now Claudia Sheinbaum has arrived with a new plan: she’s introduced incentives to boost film production. It sounds familiar, as if no one had ever thought of having a FIDECINE… for film.
To keep everyone guessing, they brought in Salma Hayek. Apparently, the actress is filming a movie here and was looking for some tax breaks. They claim there was corruption in how film funding was distributed, and instead of giving this incentive to young filmmakers, they end up forgiving taxes for someone married to one of the richest men in the world.
Don’t try to sell us what’s nothing more than a bureaucratic charade as a “cultural miracle”: they destroyed an instrument, revived it, and brought in a star to applaud them.
In this administration, they call solving the problems you created yourself “transformation.” The 4T doesn’t do politics: it does reboots. And the worst thing about a reboot isn’t that it’s bad… the worst thing is that they try to convince you it’s original.
