The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), from the Lacandon Jungle in Chiapas, announces a gathering with various organizations and their members, to be held in the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas. More than a thousand people are expected to participate, offering talks, workshops, poetry readings, art exhibits, and exchanging ideas. The attendance of Subcomandante Galeano (formerly known as Subcomandante Marcos), leader of the masked protesters, is also anticipated.
According to a statement signed by Subcomandante Moisés, Subcomandante Galeano’s right-hand man, the Zapatista Sixth Commission invites individuals, organizations, and activists to attend this gathering, which will be held on different dates in April, August, and December. One of the events will take place at the CIDECI facilities, north of San Cristóbal de las Casas.
“To the individuals, groups, collectives, movements, Zapatistas, and organizations that signed the Sixth Declaration and the Declaration for Life: through the Sixth Zapatista Commission, we have the honor of inviting you to the days of critical thinking, art, resistance, and rebellion for this year, 2026: ResignARTE or OrganizARTE. These activities will showcase artistic, organizational, and activist experiences in the face of the storm the world is enduring. The idea is to point out that, faced with the brutality of the storm, two options arise: one is to resign oneself, surrender, and let fate or the gods decide; the other is to organize and fight for resistance and rebellion,” the statement reads.
It was reported that on April 2, 3, and 4, 2026, the Sixth Commission’s Seedbed will address the theme “The Storm Within and Without” according to the Zapatista communities and villages, and will take place at the CIDECI facilities in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas. In August, the Encounter of All the Arts will be held with the themes “ResignART or Organize ART,” and the First World Encounter of Resistances and Rebellions, with the slogan “Organize or Resign Yourself,” will take place. The venue and date for these two events are yet to be determined.
Finally, the masked activists announced that, within the framework of the 33rd anniversary of the armed uprising, they will hold the Second World Encounter of Resistances and Rebellions in December 2026-January 2027.
