A significant advance in the construction of the Macuspana–Escárcega highway, which is expected to be completed in 2029, was revealed by the Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT), Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina.

On March 4, 2026, at a press conference presided over by Claudia Sheinbaum, the state official presented the progress on the road projects being promoted by the federal government.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized that the Macuspana–Escárcega segment is essential to completing the route to the Yucatán Peninsula and strengthening the four-lane corridor to Nuevo Laredo and Reynosa, within the framework of the Gulf of Mexico Corridor.

“On the Macuspana-Escárcega highway, the two sections completed last year; this year, a 32-kilometer section, and an 8-kilometer section in Campeche, with an investment of 3.5 billion pesos.

President Claudia Sheinbaum added that the Macuspana-Escárcega highway section is the missing piece needed to complete the Gulf of Mexico highway to the Yucatán Peninsula and that the project will allow for four lanes from Yucatán to Nuevo Laredo.

“It’s the missing piece to fully connect to the Yucatán Peninsula,” she noted.

Esteva Medina highlighted the modernization of the Macuspana-Escárcega section as one of the strategic projects to strengthen connectivity in southeastern Mexico.

He also stated that this project includes expansion and improvement work, and that its completion is scheduled for December 2029.

These works aim to boost regional development and reduce travel times. and improve road safety on key corridors.

The head of the SICT (Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation) detailed the progress of various strategic projects aimed at strengthening connectivity and boosting the regional economy.

The official reported that one of the priority projects is the modernization of the Toluca–Tejupilco section, a project being carried out with the support of the Secretariat of National Defense. He explained that the work is progressing from the capital of the State of Mexico toward the south of the state and will subsequently continue toward Temascaltepec.

This year, the construction of 38 kilometers of this road is planned, as part of a comprehensive project that includes a total length of 372 kilometers. The project includes special structures such as a bridge and an overpass, key elements within the highway modernization plan.

In his remarks, the head of the SICT also referred to the bridge connecting Atizapán with Atlacomulco, whose construction began in 2016 and which is part of the strategic projects to improve connectivity in the northern region of the State of Mexico. Mexico.

He specified that 24 kilometers are already completed and acknowledged that one of the main challenges was securing the right-of-way, a process that has now been overcome, allowing for an accelerated pace of construction.

He also highlighted the recent launch of one of the bridge’s structures, a technical maneuver that marked a significant advance in the project’s development.

Finally, he emphasized that these actions are part of the federal government’s plan to strengthen highway infrastructure and stimulate economic and social development, particularly in areas of high productive activity in the State of Mexico.
