Protest outside the US embassy in Mexico City: activists demand an end to the conflict in the Middle East

At least 60 activists and members of the Iranian community set fire to an effigy of the Semitic god Baal near the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City on Saturday.

This act, accompanied by prayers, aimed to demand an end to the war in the Middle East.

Among cardboard cutouts of U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the protesters gathered starting at 11:00 a.m. in the Miguel Hidalgo borough of Mexico City to “repudiate the illegal war” waged by Israel and the United States against the Islamic Republic, according to their signs.

Since the protest was called, the organizers, mostly Iranian, had warned of the burning of the Semitic god Baal, as has occurred in protests in Tehran, the capital of Iran, as a political symbol against Israel.

The Iranian community in Mexico used this demonstration to condemn the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died on Saturday, February 28, in the US and Israeli airstrikes against the Islamic Republic.

The demonstrators held up photographs of the spiritual leader of the nation, who ruled it for nearly 37 years, since his appointment in 1989. During his tenure, he consistently targeted the nation’s “enemies,” primarily the United States.

While this protest was taking place at the US Embassy in Mexico, Netanyahu asserted that Israel would continue its offensive against Iran “with full force,” a position echoed by Trump this Saturday in Miami.

Following Khamenei’s death, Mexico has taken a more positive stance than countries like Spain, which have refused to authorize the use of the Morón and Rota air bases for US and Israeli military operations against Tehran.

Amid flags from Israel, Iran, the United States, and Mexico, the demonstration ended peacefully after hours of prayer for peace in the Middle East.
