Two days before the March 8th march for International Women’s Day, security was reinforced with barricades this Friday around the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Supreme Court of Justice.

Additionally, at the intersection of Madero pedestrian street and Eje Central in the city center, Mexico City construction workers installed more two-meter-high barricades to contain women participating in the march.

The Palace of Fine Arts was also secured with steel barriers, as were its historical monuments.

Businesses and hotels along Juárez Avenue were also observed erecting barricades.

In anticipation of the International Women’s Day commemoration, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated that the National Palace would likely be secured.

In her morning press conference this March 4th at the National Palace, the president stated that “there has been much progress” for women in Mexico, but “obviously more is needed; what we have achieved is not enough.”

“It is likely that the National Palace will be secured,” the president said, noting that members of the Black Bloc and other groups seeking to damage the historic building are participating in the March 8th demonstrations.

“To avoid a confrontation between police and women, we are putting up these barriers,” she stated.
