As every year, during the month of September, the Mexico City government will offer various discounts so that families in the capital can put all their assets in order through a will validated by one of the 258 registered notaries in the city.
According to the “September, Month of the Will” program, which has been implemented since 2003, the procedure will have a 50 percent discount and a unified cost in the capital of 3,800 pesos, including VAT. The latter measure benefits vulnerable groups who wish to put their assets in order.
In addition to extending their hours of operation, notary offices will provide services on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to assist people who cannot attend during the week to complete the process of granting a public open will.
Who can make a will and where can the procedure be completed?
Starting at age 16, residents of the capital can make a will. They only need to go to a notary office to request the service and register the application for a public open will.
The National College of Notaries explains that it is not necessary to own property or have children to make a will. An official form of identification is required, such as a passport, driver’s license, professional license, or voter ID card.
People with a visual or hearing disability are allowed to attend with a trusted person who can assist them with the procedure. Likewise, if the applicant cannot read or write or does not speak Spanish, they may attend with a translator.
How do I make my will?
According to the Mexico City guide, there are six simple steps to request the procedure concerning one’s assets:
- Visit the notary office of your choice in Mexico City. You can find them in the National Directory of Notaries.
- Bring personal identification.
- Provide the notary with the general information required for the procedure.
- If witnesses are mandatory in the state where the procedure is being carried out, the notary will request them to complete the application. In some jurisdictions, up to three witnesses may be required.
- Pay the corresponding fee for the application.
- Express your wishes regarding whom you want to inherit your assets.
