Mayor of San Cristóbal, with inexplicable wealth

The one who “likes to play with fire” in Chiapas, we’re told, is the mayor of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Fabiola Ricci Diestel (Morena party), as many are wondering how she manages to give her two sons a “magnate lifestyle” despite the “republican austerity” measures. We’re told the scandal erupted after the two young men boasted on social media that Ms. Ricci had allegedly gifted each of them a high-end Audi worth over 1.5 million pesos. However, their social media history was full of posts about their trips, gold jewelry, their friendship with the corridos tumbados singer Natanel Cano, and their “antics,” such as flipping a RZR or getting away with assaulting a young man. They deleted all of that in the wake of the scandal. Where does she get the money for all this?

From Guanajuato, we hear that the mayor of Silao, Janet Melanie Murillo Chávez (PAN), is working “with her hands tied,” after six council members (four from Morena, one from MC, and one from PAN) still haven’t approved the municipal budget three months into the year. Sources indicate that the problem is serious for Ms. Murillo, as the purchase of patrol cars, essential for security, is still pending, as are the payment of school scholarships, support for women and farmers, and the public works program. Worse still, it seems the disagreement lacks any real justification, although the opposition of PAN council member Alejandro Peña Gallo has drawn attention. Don’t help me, buddy!

The one who’s “very pleased,” we’re told, is the rector of the University of Veracruz, Martín Aguilar Sánchez, since he successfully navigated all the legal challenges that sought to overturn his extended term, which began last year without a public call for applications, registration of candidates, or election of the Governing Board. We hear that Mr. Aguilar celebrated in grand style with his closest associates, and “in private” they mocked his enemies who were powerless to remove him. But beyond the legal issues, some are concerned because his “new rectorship” continues to operate in the same way, without replacing the staff who in the past generated so much animosity. Imagine that!
