The municipal government of Zihuatanejo is seeking support from the United States government to train the Municipal Preventive Police in security matters. They are also requesting that the U.S. remove the destination from the current travel advisory for the state of Guerrero.
Mayor Liz Tapia Castro reported that she held meetings with Sarah Duffy, U.S. Consul General, and William Densmore, head of the Regional Security Office at the embassy, with whom she discussed these issues during her visit to the area.
According to the mayor, there is a possibility that the U.S. government will provide training not only to the municipal police, but also to the Civil Protection and Fire Department personnel of Zihuatanejo.
Tapia Castro indicated that data on security conditions in the municipality was presented and expressed confidence that, after analyzing the information, an exception for Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo will be considered within the travel advisory for Guerrero, similar to the decision previously made by the Canadian government.
