A video circulating on social media shows an officer committing police brutality against a young man who was allegedly offering gardening services.
The video shows the young man sitting on the sidewalk when a police officer approaches to search him. After exchanging a few words, the officer punches him in the face, knocking him to the ground.
Subsequently, a vehicle from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) approaches, while the aggressor officer continues searching the young man and another officer simply watches.
The SSC issued a statement reporting that the incident was part of a routine check after officers received a report of a person sitting idly on the sidewalk. They went to the location to investigate.
According to the report, the incident occurred on March 21 in the Ejido Viejo neighborhood of Santa Úrsula Coapa, in the Coyoacán borough.
The SSC reported that its General Directorate of Internal Affairs has opened an internal administrative investigation and that the officers involved have been identified and summoned to give their statements.
The statement also indicated that the officer seen assaulting the citizen will be temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
The SSC reiterated that it will not tolerate conduct that violates the institution’s principles, rules, and codes, nor actions that undermine public trust. All illegal acts involving police officers will be investigated and punished, guaranteeing that corruption and any action that violates the rights of the public will not be permitted, the Secretariat declared.
