Mexican authorities revealed that this type of fraud has caused victims to lose between 5,000 and over 2 million pesos so far in 2026 alone.
During Holy Week, the Citizen Council for Security and Justice of Mexico City released a list of the most popular destinations targeted by “travel scammers” for 2026, revealing that Cancún tops the list of tourist spots used for these types of scams.
The same source indicates that Acapulco, Huatulco, and Puerto Vallarta are other destinations where scammers often lure their victims by selling fake packages.
“Travel scammers” are fraud networks that create nonexistent travel packages at irresistible prices. These scammers typically use trendy destinations or less-monitored “exclusive” beaches to create fake websites and social media profiles that disappear after receiving payment for the reservation.
The Citizens’ Council for Security and Justice reports that the primary medium used by fraudulent travel agencies is the internet, accounting for 58% of cases. It was also observed that 63% of victims are women and 37% are men.
The Citizens’ Council for Security and Justice of Mexico City recommends the following to avoid falling victim to these types of travel scams:
Research the company you plan to book your vacation package with. Check their ratings and reviews on social media or websites.
Check their references with the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), verify that the agency is registered with the Ministry of Tourism, and has physical offices.
Avoid making advance payments or transfers. Criminals often exploit people’s emotions by sending them limited-time “offers.”
If you find a package with flights, lodging, and meals included at an extremely low price, be suspicious.
Do not fill out forms with personal information unless you have verified that it is the official website (which should begin with https://). Keep all emails, confirmations, and documents related to your reservation, as these may be useful if you wish to file a complaint.
If you need any legal or psychological advice or support, you can call the Citizen Council’s Safety and Confidential Chat Line (55 5533 5533), available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
