Students from various teacher training colleges and workers from the Autonomous University “Benito Juárez” of Oaxaca (UABJO) blocked some of the main thoroughfares in the state capital for the second consecutive day.
The student teachers commandeered public transportation buses to block the intersection of Calzada Héroes de Chapultepec with Porfirio Díaz Street and Juárez Avenue; while the university employees blocked University Avenue in front of the University City campus.
In the case of the students, the cause is to demand a resolution to their list of demands, which they recently submitted to the heads of the Oaxaca State Institute of Public Education (IEEPO) and the State Government Secretariat (Sego).
Their main demands are the automatic hiring of graduates within the state education system, improved infrastructure at the various schools, and an increase in the scholarships they receive to continue their studies.
While members of the Union of Workers and Employees of the Autonomous University of Benito Juárez of Oaxaca (STEUABJO) are demanding that university and state government authorities fulfill their promise to acquire land to subdivide for the benefit of the workers, so they can build their homes there.
This is one of the union’s longest-standing demands and is included in their annual list of demands, but to date, it has not received a favorable response.
