On the eve of the Holy Week holiday season, a group of six tourists were rescued from the sea at La Bocana beach in the tourist destination of Huatulco Bays on the Oaxaca coast, after being at risk of drowning.
The group of tourists, all foreign nationals, were caught off guard by strong waves and became trapped in the surf.
Locals noticed the incident and decided to go to their rescue; however, the rough seas hampered their efforts.
Following the incident, a rescue operation was launched, involving the Naval Search, Rescue, and Maritime Surveillance Station (ENSAR) of the Mexican Navy, Civil Protection and Fire Department personnel from Huatulco, as well as staff from the Port Authority and the Mexican Red Cross.
The strong waves complicated the rescue of the last tourist, so with the assistance of a boat, they were brought safely to shore.
Locals reported that the area lacks lifeguards to provide prompt assistance to swimmers.
“Right now, the whole community, the kids here in town, have jumped in to swim and save some people.”
Local authorities urged residents and visitors to heed the recommendations of the authorities and respect beach safety guidelines in order to prevent dangerous situations.
