In Zihuatanejo, more than 50 cases of cattle affected by screwworms have been registered, as well as approximately 15 infected dogs, reported the Director of Rural Development, veterinarian Armando Carrillo Infante.
The official indicated that the figures come from data provided by Senasica (National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality), although he noted that field observations suggest the number could be higher. He urged ranchers to reinforce preventative measures and act immediately in the event of possible infestations.
He warned that the calf birthing season increases the risk of infestation, especially in the navel area, which facilitates the spread of the larvae.
In response to this situation, the municipal government hired two veterinarians to serve the mountainous and coastal areas during 2026. To date, there are no confirmed or suspected cases in humans in the municipality.
