Mexico denounced the death of another of its citizens in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and demanded an investigation into the “serious omissions” at the detention center where the migrant was being held.

With this case, according to the Mexican Foreign Ministry, the number of Mexicans who have died in ICE custody or in raids during the second term of U.S. President Donald Trump, who launched an anti-immigrant policy upon his return to the White House in January 2015, has risen to 14.

The most recent incident occurred in California on Wednesday night. The Mexican man was detained at the Adelanto facility and was transferred to a hospital in Victorville, where he died, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement released Friday night.

The institution urged the United States to ensure that “these regrettable cases do not continue” and demanded “an immediate review of the Adelanto facility due to the serious omissions and evident deficiencies in the provision of medical care to those in its custody.”

Without identifying the deceased Mexican, the Foreign Ministry stated that the consulate in San Bernardino is in contact with his family and also with U.S. authorities “to determine the cause of death, obtain his complete medical records, and learn the circumstances leading up to” his death.

On Wednesday, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum lamented the deaths of Mexicans in ICE custody. “We demand that human rights be respected. (…) We do not agree with these forms of detention,” she declared at a press conference.

In a report released that day, the Foreign Ministry detailed that six of the cases known up to that point were related to “medical complications,” and four more were classified as “suicides.”

In addition, two other Mexicans have died in immigration raids, and one was killed during a shootout at immigration facilities.
