The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of the state of Baja California Sur announced that Fernanda Villarreal, former director of the Housing Institute (INVI) in the state and one of Adán Augusto López’s key operatives in the Morena party’s internal elections in 2023, has been formally charged.
A judge imposed the measure on Fernanda and other former INVI officials after the second part of the initial hearing. These officials were also accused of allegedly participating in the misuse of public funds.
Mexican senator and governor in the crosshairs of the United States
The U.S. has already put names on the table. Raymundo Riva Palacio warns that Adán Augusto López and Marina del Pilar are under investigation and that Washington is pressuring Mexico to act.
According to official information on the Fernanda Villarreal case, she was formally charged with money laundering and embezzlement of state funds.
Information revealed through journalistic investigations indicates that the former head of the Baja California Sur Housing Institute (INVI) allocated at least 10 million pesos from the institute’s budget to finance Adán Augusto López’s political campaign in the state.
Furthermore, it was detailed that an additional three million pesos were used to purchase food baskets and promotional items, which were allegedly diverted to benefit the then-Morena party candidate in a systematic manner.
Despite Fernanda “N” being formally charged with money laundering, a judge ruled that Adán Augusto’s former operative would face trial while free on bail, subject to the precautionary measures established for such cases.
It is important to note that the investigations will continue in order to determine the full extent of the damage caused to INVI itself.
