Ahead of the Ironman 70.3 scheduled for April 26, the Director General of the Los Cabos Municipal Sports Institute (INDEM), Elton Olachea, announced that more than 100 athletes from Los Cabos will participate in this demanding competition, both individually and as part of teams.
The official emphasized that the municipality will have a strong representation, comprised of experienced athletes and others seeking to achieve a personal goal.
“We are now exceeding 100 athletes from Los Cabos who will be competing in the Ironman in individual disciplines. It’s important to note that there are both individual and team events; for the individual events, we are approaching 100 athletes from across the state who will be competing. We’re getting close, the days are ticking by, so we’ll keep working on it.”
Regarding the support provided, Olachea explained that approximately 47 complimentary entries were allocated to local triathletes from across the state, primarily from Los Cabos and La Paz. However, he acknowledged that several athletes had already paid their registration fees before the announcement of this benefit.
Expectations are high for this international competition, as authorities highlighted that only 20 percent of the participants will be doing the triathlon for the first time, indicating that there is experience and talent to put Los Cabos on the map.
“I am sure that among this number of athletes from Los Cabos, some will even qualify for the Ironman World Championship. We have athletes with a very high level of skill. I wouldn’t dare to predict how many will finish, but we also have people who are doing it because they have set it as a life project for themselves, and that’s all valid.”
The eighth edition of the Ironman 70.3 will bring together between 1,500 and 1,700 triathletes from 45 different countries who will traverse the destination’s diverse landscapes by swimming, cycling, and running.
The economic impact is estimated to be significant, with an economic benefit of at least 130 million pesos, a figure that could increase depending on the influx of tourists during the competition.
Each athlete travels with an average of three people, which increases the benefits for the tourism industry.
On the competition side, the athletes will face a course that includes a 1.9-kilometer swim, a 90-kilometer bike ride, and a 21.1-kilometer run.
The professional category will have a prize purse of $25,000, as well as the possibility of qualifying for other Ironman events, although not all participants will receive direct entry.
