The importance of the El Novillo Dam was underscored during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s visit to Baja California Sur on Saturday afternoon. There, the federal leader was received by the mayor of La Paz, Milena Quiroga Romero, and together they inspected the progress of the strategic project that will mark a turning point in the water supply for the capital of Baja California Sur.
Governor Víctor Castro Cosío, the head of the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), Efraín Morales López, and the director of the Baja California Sur Water Commission (BCS), Julio Villarreal, were also present and verified the structural and administrative progress of the project. Touring the construction site, they reviewed the excavations, the dam area, technical specifications, and access points.
“We are extremely grateful for the support of our President because we know that water is a priority for Mexico,” the governor stated, “and of course, water is also a priority in Baja California Sur with the support of Dr. Sheinbaum.”
The project is located in the municipality of Comondú and is one of the most complex in terms of water resources.
El Novillo is associated with pipelines, storage tanks, and distribution systems. The mayor of La Paz is a central figure in promoting this option as part of the strategy to ensure a guaranteed water supply for the state capital.
El Novillo is part of the More Water for La Paz Plan, promoted by the mayor’s office, which includes water collection, rehabilitation of pipeline networks, modernization of wells, and efficient use of the resource.
2.4 billion pesos will be invested, including the installation of a 15-kilometer aqueduct and a water treatment plant. The project is estimated to be completed by mid-2027.
