The Huasteca region is rich not only in stunning natural sites but also in history. This Easter break, if you’re looking for destinations that combine adventure and culture, here are five places near Tampico that you shouldn’t miss.

It’s worth noting that the Huasteca, according to the INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History), is a region where cultures such as the Teenek, Nahua, Otomi, Tepehua, and Pame flourished. It encompasses various areas of Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, and northern Veracruz, as well as parts of Hidalgo, Querétaro, and Puebla.

Xilitla. Just three and a half hours from Tampico, you’ll find this Magical Town in San Luis Potosí, known for its mountain setting. Here you can enjoy Huastec cuisine, such as enchiladas, local coffee, and artisanal ice cream.

Here you’ll find Edward James’s Sculpture Castle, a dazzling space and a meeting place for surrealist artists. Also worth visiting is the Leonora Carrington Museum, which houses both paintings and sculptures by the renowned English painter who lived in Mexico.

Tamtoc. This archaeological zone is one of the most important Huastec settlements of ancient Mexico. The site features approximately 70 structures with circular shapes or rounded corners, as well as a central plaza surrounded by buildings.

Tamtoc is also notable for its archaeological finds, including sculptures such as “The Priestess” and “The Scarified Woman,” which demonstrate the importance of the female figure, fertility, and the symbolism of corn in Huastec culture. The site is open from Tuesday to Sunday and can be accessed from Ciudad Valles by taking the highway towards Tampico.

The Cave of Swallows (Sótano de las Golondrinas). One of the most impressive natural wonders of the Huasteca Potosina region, located less than an hour from the municipality of Aquismón. This natural abyss, considered one of the largest vertical caves in the world, boasts a depth of over 500 meters and an opening up to 300 meters in diameter.

Xilitla San Luis Potosi

Declared a Natural Monument of Mexico, the site attracts visitors with its breathtaking scenery and the unique experience of descending more than 600 steps to its viewpoints, surrounded by lush vegetation and offering camping opportunities in direct contact with nature.

Tampachiche Beach. Located in Tampico Alto, in northern Veracruz, this municipality offers a variety of attractions. Just over 40 minutes away lies Tampachiche Beach, a beach primarily inhabited by fishermen, but also a popular spot for snorkeling.

Area highlights include El Solito Water Park; the Huastec Regional Museum, which houses dozens of pre-Hispanic artifacts; and the Church of the Lord of Mercy, where the remains of Friar Andrés de Olmos are located. Additionally, the coastal town of La Ribera offers a wide variety of fresh fish and seafood.

Playa Hermosa. Also in the northern Veracruz region, in the municipality of Pueblo Viejo, we find Playa Hermosa, which recently inaugurated a boardwalk, a coastal boulevard, a tourist lighthouse, and a viewpoint overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, aiming to establish itself as another tourist destination.

Known for its tranquility and crystal-clear waters, and just half an hour from Tampico, Playa Hermosa also offers restaurants serving a variety of seafood dishes, as well as Huasteca cuisine. Which Huasteca destination will you visit first this Easter?
