Canelo announced his enrollment at the San Diego University for Integrative Studies on Instagram, posting photos of his first day of school with the caption: “It’s never too late to start.”
In the photo, he holds up a small chalkboard listing his teacher’s name as “Bryan,” his favourite hobby as “golf” — and what he wants to be when he grows up: a Businessman. He’s listed as part of the Class of 2027.
But here’s what makes this story powerful. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Canelo left school at age 15 to turn professional and help support his family. Twenty years and multiple world championships later — he’s going back.
He’s currently recovering from elbow surgery and plans to return to the ring in September 2026. But instead of sitting at home, he chose to invest in himself in a completely different way.
One of the highest-paid athletes on the planet. A man who could spend the rest of his life doing nothing. And he chose to sit in a classroom and learn.
That is the Mexican spirit. You never stop building. You never stop growing. No matter what you’ve already achieved.
