Under Andy’s leadership: Morena loses 160,000 members due to lack of authenticity

The national leadership of Morena has opted for silence after a double setback from the National Electoral Institute (INE). The electoral body decided to deduct 160,000 members from the party after discovering that their authenticity could not be verified. Adding to this blow is the party’s systematic omission, having ignored 10 official requests from the INE seeking information on members who appear duplicated in organizations seeking to become new political parties.

This information vacuum occurs in the party that “has no satiation”: Morena has consolidated itself as the largest recipient of public funding in a country that, in itself, allocates more money to political parties than any other in Latin America.

Between 2018 and 2026, Morena has received the stratospheric sum of 18.348 billion pesos in public funding. This amount almost doubles the 11 billion pesos given to the PAN and far exceeds the 10 billion pesos given to the PRI. Although the INE’s (National Electoral Institute) allocation system is based on the number of votes to prevent illicit funds, the opposition denounces the complete lack of transparency within the ruling party.

The opacity is so profound that Morena refuses to disclose the total cost of the more than 11 million voter ID cards it is distributing to its members. Who is behind this process? None other than Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, the son of former President López Obrador, who now pulls the strings of the party’s internal structure.

Opaque Accounts Under “Andy” López Beltrán’s Command
Despite demands for transparency, the party argues that it will not reveal the amount invested or the companies supplying the ID cards, claiming that the INE already reviews its expenses regularly. This refusal to account for contracts and suppliers fuels suspicions about the true origin and destination of funds during López Beltrán’s tenure.

To date, there are no official sanctions or investigations into this lack of transparency. Morena continues to operate in the shadows, while the National Electoral Institute (INE) awaits a response to its inquiries regarding its inflated voter registry. In a country of wealthy political parties, Morena remains the king of opacity.
