Residents of the community of Arroyo Seco, in the municipality of Petatlán, on the Costa Grande, blocked the Acapulco-Zihuatanejo federal highway and detained eight marines because, allegedly, they beat two young men.
Around 1 p.m., some 80 residents of Arroyo Seco began blocking the highway. They first placed vehicles across the road to completely block traffic, then intermittently opened one lane.
This highway is the only road connecting Acapulco and Zihuatanejo.
According to residents, the blockade was triggered by an attack on two young men by a group of marines. The account states that the two young men were gathering poles to cut mangoes when the marines arrived and demanded their cell phones. One of them, who, according to residents, has been diagnosed with autism, became nervous and was unable to hand over his device.
In response, the marines began beating him and the other young man who was with him.
The residents demanded the presence of Navy commanders to cover the medical expenses for the injuries inflicted on the young men by the marines.
They reported that one of the young men suffered severe head injuries and requires further examination to determine the extent of the damage. However, they noted that the families of both young men are of limited means.
