The Playa del Carmen Municipal Public Safety Secretariat has installed 424 body cameras to strengthen oversight of police work, record interventions in public spaces, and monitor operations in real time from the Command, Control, Communications, and Computing Center (C4). On Thursday, the operation of the technological system implemented in various surveillance areas of the municipality was inspected at the C4 facility.
During a tour of the C4 facilities, Mayor Estefanía Mercado, accompanied by the Municipal Public Safety Secretary, Carlos Montesinos, observed the operation of the body cameras and how the images captured by officers can be monitored in real time from a central platform.
According to the technical explanation presented during the visit, 144 of the installed cameras have remote connectivity, live streaming, and cloud storage, allowing for direct monitoring of the actions of officers deployed throughout the city from the command center.
The other 280 devices operate with high-resolution recording and internal storage, expanding field recording coverage to document interventions, patrols, and police actions.
The distribution of the cameras was primarily directed to law enforcement agencies with the largest territorial presence, including the Preventive Police, Traffic Police, and Tourist Police, with the goal of increasing surveillance capacity in urban areas, main roads, and visitor service areas.
During the demonstration, it was explained that the system allows for real-time verification of protocol compliance during checks, arrests, or preventive interventions, in addition to generating audiovisual backups that can be used in internal procedures or as evidence in case of incidents.
Carlos Montesinos indicated that the use of body cameras aims to permanently document the actions of officers and offer greater certainty to both the public and the officers themselves during their daily duties.
He added that this technological tool also strengthens internal institutional control processes by allowing for the review of procedures, the handling of reports, and the follow-up of specific actions when a complaint or incident occurs.
The operation from the C4 center allows information to be centralized on a single monitoring platform, where specialized personnel can observe in real time the routes and actions of units equipped with active transmission.
This system is part of a public safety modernization strategy aimed at incorporating surveillance tools, operational control, and digital backup into police work.
