With the arrival of the warmer months, various urban and domestic pests tend to increase, posing risks to health and well-being in homes and public spaces.
High temperatures and humidity create ideal conditions for insects and rodents to reproduce rapidly, making it important to know the main threats and how to prevent their appearance.
Specialists in wildlife management and pest control, in an interview with the newspaper, explain the reasons for this situation and the precautions that should be taken in homes to protect spaces and their inhabitants.
David Gutiérrez Peña, from a pest control company that serves the city of Mérida, explains that pests reproduce in favorable conditions. Cockroaches, for example, exist in practically every part of the world except Antarctica, as the conditions there are not suitable for them to live.
On the other hand, humidity, heat, and a neglected environment due to a lack of cleaning favor the reproduction of this pest.
These insects are attracted to food scraps, accumulated garbage, and moisture in kitchens and bathrooms. To prevent them, it is recommended to keep surfaces clean, store food in airtight containers, empty the garbage daily, and seal cracks and crevices where they can enter.
“There is another species of cockroach called the German cockroach, which is smaller and more difficult to control. Its presence is more common in kitchens and food storage areas. Eliminating cockroaches goes far beyond the use of insecticides. Fumigation is a good alternative, but it doesn’t guarantee lasting results if clean and hygienic conditions aren’t maintained,” says Gutiérrez.
“Scorpions also tend to appear during this season. They seek refuge from the heat and sun, so they are usually found under rocks or in dark, cool places. Some can appear in bathroom drains, which is why it is essential that these have trap systems, where a body of water prevents the pests from moving from the pipes to the outside,” he said.
