They’re ripping us off… and some are even fighting with the least guilty party.
Imagine this: You go to buy a Coke, the store makes a $1 peso profit.
But before it even gets to the store, it already has $7 pesos in taxes. And you get there and yell at the store clerk:
“Thief, lower the price!”
This is how gasoline works in Mexico:
For every liter you buy:
$6 to $7 pesos are taxes (IEPS)
On top of that, they add 16% VAT
Then comes logistics, transportation, storage
And in the end… the gas station makes a small profit (a few cents or a few pesos)
Simple translation: The biggest cut is NOT taken by the gas station.
Real-life example with simple numbers:
Suppose you pay $24 per liter:
~$7 → taxes
~$3 → VAT
~$12 → actual fuel cost + logistics
~$2 → gas station margin
Total $24
Taxes represent 29% of the total price.
The gas station owner only earns 8%.
And someone thinks that a banner will fix anything…
“It’s expensive here.”
Really? And what about the other banner we should put up for the government?
“The government charges more here than it costs to produce.”
Even if you force the gas station to lower prices, they can only adjust THEIR share.
In other words… pennies.
But the real impact…
they’re not even touching that.
Direct question:
Do you really want cheap gas?
Then stop arguing with the cashier…
and start understanding who sets the price from the top.
And this isn’t politics, it’s basic math.
But almost nobody wants to do that.
