On the morning of Wednesday, April 22, a fatal accident occurred on the San Juan del Río-Amealco de Buenfil highway in Querétaro, near La Muralla.
The preliminary death toll is at least 9, with a total of 27 people injured. Of those injured, at least 3 were airlifted to hospitals for medical treatment. The rest were taken to medical facilities in the area.
The bus crashed into a tree just past the La Muralla hotel, according to local reports.
The accident happened while the bus was traveling on State Highway 310 toward San Juan del Río, at approximately kilometer 8, within the municipality of Amealco de Buenfil. The area remains cordoned off by authorities to facilitate rescue and investigation efforts.
According to some local reports, the bus was traveling at high speed at the time of the accident. Furthermore, it was reported that the driver allegedly fell asleep, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the accident. Data collection continues to determine responsibility.
At least 36 passengers were traveling on the bus, most of them from the community of San Ildefonso, where they boarded. After receiving the report of the tragic accident, state Civil Protection personnel, paramedics, and security forces quickly arrived at the scene to provide medical attention and assist in the rescue of those affected.
Authorities provided care to the injured and transported those requiring hospitalization.
Since the time of the accident, the corresponding procedures have been underway at the scene, and the highway remains completely closed.
Due to the impact, the bus was completely destroyed in the front. The crash caused some passengers to be ejected from the vehicle, complicating rescue and emergency response efforts at the scene.
As of now, authorities have not released any official information about the accident. Earlier in the day, the state governor, Mauricio Kuri, reported that he was traveling to the Sierra Gorda region of Querétaro to meet with residents of that state.
