Tokyo. Japan has agreed to import one million barrels of crude oil from Mexico, with delivery scheduled for July, in an effort by Tokyo to diversify its energy sources in the wake of the conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran, the Nikkei business daily reported Wednesday.

The news comes after a telephone conversation Tuesday between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.

Sheinbaum reported after the meeting with Takaichi that, at Japan’s request, the Mexican state oil company Pemex would export crude oil to the Asian country in an unspecified quantity to mitigate the impact of the Middle East conflict on shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

“It has been exported many times; this is not the first time,” she added, stating that it is “surplus crude” not being used by Mexican refineries.
