An armed attack on Monday at the Teotihuacan archaeological site, one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations, sparked a strong international reaction after the death of a Canadian citizen and injuries to at least six other people were confirmed.
The incident occurred at the site, located on the outskirts of Mexico City, raising concerns among authorities and diplomatic missions due to the constant flow of national and international visitors.
According to initial official reports, a man opened fire on tourists and then took his own life.
Following the attack, security and emergency personnel deployed an operation to secure the area and provide assistance to the injured.
Given the seriousness of the events, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, headed by Ambassador Ronald Johnson, issued an alert to its citizens.
The embassy’s alert aims to inform and guide its citizens following the attack in Teotihuacan. In its official statement, the diplomatic mission indicated that it is monitoring the incident and is in contact with Mexican authorities to follow up on the situation.
It also confirmed that the area has been secured by security forces.
“Local authorities have confirmed that the site is under control and that the injured are receiving medical attention at hospitals in the region,” the embassy stated.
The attack left a preliminary death toll of one person—a Canadian tourist—and at least six injured, including visitors of various nationalities.
The victims of the attack include both Mexican and foreign tourists who were at the archaeological site.
Following the report, emergency teams acted immediately to evacuate tourists and provide medical attention to the injured, who were taken to nearby clinics.
The incident raised concerns not only because of the violence of the act, but also because it occurred at a site considered a cultural heritage site and a symbol of tourism in Mexico.
Recommendations for Tourists After the Attack in Teotihuacan
Both local authorities and the U.S. Embassy issued a series of recommendations for those in the area or planning to visit:
Maintain immediate communication with family and friends to inform them of your well-being.
Follow the instructions of the authorities at all times.
Avoid spreading unconfirmed information.
In case of emergency, call 911.
In addition, the diplomatic mission suggested registering with their alert systems to facilitate location and support in emergency situations.
The attack has once again placed Teotihuacan in the international spotlight, not only because of the tragedy, but also because of the potential impact on the perception of safety in Mexican tourist destinations.
Authorities are continuing their investigations to clarify the attacker’s motives and determine if there were any failures in the site’s security protocols.
Meanwhile, security personnel remain present in the area to ensure the safety of visitors.
The case has also generated reactions from other governments, especially due to the presence of foreign victims, which reinforces international attention on what happened in this emblematic place.
