Veracruz state police officers fired shots after mistaking the vehicle in which a woman was traveling for one reported stolen, according to information from the Veracruz Public Security Secretariat.
The operation was being carried out to locate a pickup truck linked to a crime report. The officers fired directly at the car in which two women were traveling, mistaking it for a vehicle involved in the pursuit.
The state agency indicated that both occupants were injured during the incident and were taken for medical treatment. One of them later died, while the other remains in stable condition.

The victim was identified as Bertha Burciaga Morán, 38, originally from Puebla, who worked as an anesthesiologist at the IMSS General Hospital No. 24 in Poza Rica.
The incident occurred near the Tuxpan tollbooth, where the vehicle sustained multiple bullet impacts.
The National Union of Social Security Workers’ Delegation III expressed its condolences to the family of the professional in a public statement.
Following the incident, both the officers involved and their weapons were turned over to the State Attorney General’s Office, the agency responsible for determining liability and reviewing the procedures followed during the operation.
