Eliminating inclusive language is a step backward; it will increase bullying: Activist

Amid the controversy surrounding the elimination of inclusive language in schools, supported by the Secretary of Education in Durango, Guillermo Adame, Tadeo Campagne, director of Casa Arcoíris (Rainbow House), pointed out that this issue goes far beyond a single letter; eliminating it renders diverse children and adolescents invisible and could increase bullying based on gender.

“Several things need to be considered here, such as what the educational reform says about educating children in inclusive language. Another issue is how it’s actually used, because I think that when the legislator and the secretary talk about eliminating it, it should be noted that teachers don’t always use the gender-inclusive pronoun ‘todes’ (everyone),” he added.

“It’s very important to emphasize that this isn’t just a matter of language. It’s about inclusion, respect, and validation. There are studies that support this, and we at Casa Arcoíris have observed it, that children and adolescents have many mental health problems stemming from a lack of recognition of their identity and sexual orientation,” he noted.

“There are studies that support this, and we’ve noticed it at Casa Arcoíris, that show children and adolescents have many mental health problems stemming from a lack of recognition of their identity and sexual orientation,” he pointed out.

” The activist added that, setting aside the sexual and reproductive aspects, there is an identity and orientation in childhood, so, “I find it utterly disastrous and a complete step backward to want to do this. We need to examine what is happening with homophobic bullying; can the promoting deputy or the secretary deny that there are high rates of bullying and that much of this harassment is related to the identity of minors?”

Tadeo considered it disastrous that the institution is invalidating a person’s identity and orientation when speaking about trans and non-binary people, and that this will provoke more bullying fostered by educational institutions.

The interviewee pointed out that this is a complex issue that must be debated, but, without a doubt, it seems to him that it is being addressed very irresponsibly and very lightly based on the position of the Green Party deputy, Osvaldo Santillán, as well as the secretary of education.

At the same time, the director of Casa Arcoíris called for the establishment of a dialogue between authorities and experts, ensuring that all sides are heard.

Finally, he emphasized that the truly important point is not a letter, not adding an “x” or an “e” to the language; the issue is the impact on people, understanding that personal ideologies cannot be prioritized.
