The National Union of Mexican Postal Service Workers deemed a strike imminent, set to begin at the stroke of midnight on May 1st, due to the lack of a favorable response to their demands.

At a press conference, the union’s general secretary, Manuel Fermín Acevedo, accused the authorities of sending officials with no decision-making power to the conciliation meetings held in recent days.

He stated that “the workers are tired” of their demands being ignored.

He denounced the discontent stemming from various violations of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, as well as the fact that their wages have fallen so far behind that their income is below the general minimum wage.

He cited as an example that mail carriers must use their own money to maintain the motorcycles they use, given the risk posed by the lack of timely repairs, and the fact that the renewal of the vehicle fleet has been halted.

The union is also demanding the filling of 2,500 positions that have remained vacant since 2018 due to retirement, pensions, resignations, or death, which is limiting the operational capacity of Correos de México (Mexican Postal Service).

The leader of the National Union of Mexican Postal Service Workers said they are prepared to maintain the strike for as long as necessary until their demands are met.

Manuel Fermín Acevedo indicated that if the government no longer wants Correos de México, the workers are willing to form a cooperative and continue providing service to the public.
