President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo highlighted on Friday a reduction in the perception of insecurity in the country, according to the most recent results of the National Urban Public Security Survey conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), which, she affirmed, reflect progress in the National Security Strategy.
In her morning press conference at the National Palace, the president presented a graph with the survey data, according to which the perception of insecurity fell from 63.8 percent in December 2025 to 61.5 percent in 2026, representing a decrease of 2.3 percentage points.
“The perception of security is related to various issues, primarily the crimes committed in the place where people live. This survey is conducted in the country’s main cities, the most populated cities in Mexico,” she explained.
She specified that the INEGI (National Institute of Statistics and Geography) measurement focuses on urban areas and pointed out that, in the case of Mexico City, the evaluation is even carried out by borough, unlike other states where only the main cities are considered.
The mayor emphasized that the perception of insecurity does not depend exclusively on crime rates, but also on factors related to the urban environment. “It also has to do with other things like the condition of a municipality. For example, if the streetlights aren’t working in a city, if it’s dark at night because the streetlights aren’t working, well, that also influences the perception of insecurity,” she indicated.
Sheinbaum maintained that the reduction registered in the survey represents progress, although she acknowledged that it is a moderate change. She added that her government will continue working in coordination with state and municipal authorities to reduce crime and improve the public’s perception of security.
“We are going to continue working in all areas and in coordination with municipal presidents and state governments, obviously to reduce crime and secondly to create a perception of greater security in the country,” he stated.
