Rear Admiral Fernando Farías appears before Judge

Rear Admiral Fernando Farías Laguna, the alleged leader of the fuel theft network operating in the country’s maritime customs offices, is currently appearing before a federal judge after being arrested yesterday in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.

The nephew-in-law of José Rafael Ojeda Durán, former Secretary of the Navy during López Obrador’s administration, was presented before Judge Julián Ercolini of the 12th Federal Criminal and Correctional Court, who will preside over his case.

According to his lawyer, Epigmenio Mendieta, Farías Laguna will refuse extradition to Mexico to face charges of organized crime related to hydrocarbon theft, brought by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).

The lawyer stated that his client will request political asylum from the authorities of that South American country, because his life is at risk if he is transferred to Mexico, as they intend to link him to a criminal organization, when, he asserted, he was the one who denounced the fuel theft network during the administration of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

However, he noted that before the request is resolved, Farías Laguna will have to face charges for entering Argentina with false documents.
