The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Velasco Álvarez, held a telephone conversation yesterday with the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, in which he emphasized Mexico’s commitment and ongoing willingness to continue actively contributing to the work of international organizations on issues related to peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development.

According to information released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on social media, Velasco reiterated that the country will continue to promote proposals aimed at strengthening the work and functioning of the United Nations system.

In this context, Guterres stressed that Mexico is “a fundamental pillar of multilateralism.”

Later, Velasco participated in the presentation of the UN Mexico 2020-2025 results report, led by the UN Resident Coordinator in Mexico, Allegra Baiocchi, at the National Film Archive (Cineteca Nacional) in Chapultepec.

In his remarks, the Foreign Minister affirmed that in the face of the great challenges facing the world and multilateralism itself, Mexico “will once again be an architect of the institutions of the future,” while reiterating that the federal government maintains close collaboration with UN agencies, funds, and programs to ensure that their benefits reach all sectors of the population through international cooperation.

Velasco also met yesterday with Mexico’s Ambassador to the United States, Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, whom he commended for his work, after Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed earlier that morning that she would nominate Roberto Lazzeri as the new diplomatic representative in Washington.

Moctezuma stated in a video message that the potential change at the embassy did not come as a surprise. “It’s a conversation we had already had.”
