State authorities will determine the future use of El Encanto stadium, which was previously leased to Grupo Salinas, the former owner of the Mazatlán soccer team, Mayor Estrella Palacios Domínguez announced.

The mayor explained that her administration, in coordination with the Sinaloa state government, will explore repurposing the stadium—built in 2020 by the administration of then-Governor Quirino Ordaz—for other activities such as artistic events, sporting events other than soccer, or for soccer teams interested in playing their matches there.

Mazatlán’s Secretary of Public Security, Othoniel Barrón, announced that a large-scale security operation involving 500 officers was implemented for Wednesday’s match between the Mazatlán and Deportivo Toluca soccer teams at El Encanto stadium. The match, which ended with a 4-3 victory for Mazatlán, was intended to guarantee the safety of thousands of attendees.

He commented that municipal police officers, as well as state and federal forces, and private security personnel were present around the stadium before the game began.

Grupo Salinas, owned by businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, the former owner of Mazatlán, sold the franchise to Club Atlante in December 2025. Experts considered this a result of the project’s lack of sporting and commercial success.
