The debate surrounding privacy and the control of our communications is ongoing in Mexico, particularly after the implementation of a system requiring each phone line registered with a CURP (Unique Population Registry Code).
Many users on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) claim that the solution to maintaining anonymity is to migrate to an eSIM.
The idea of purchasing a virtual SIM card from home is convincing users who prefer not to risk government surveillance, but is it possible to bypass registration with this method?
What is an eSIM and how does it work?
Unlike the physical SIM card we all know, the eSIM is a component already integrated into your phone’s circuitry from the factory. In other words, it’s a type of “chip” that is activated virtually. You don’t need to insert anything; you simply scan a QR code provided by your carrier, and your device connects to the network.
It’s ideal for travelers or those who want to have two numbers on a single device, as it allows you to switch service providers digitally and almost instantly.
Can you avoid CURP registration by using an eSIM?
The short answer, supported by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT), is a resounding no. Although some users claim that buying an international eSIM online allowed them to avoid CURP registration.
The only instance in which you CANNOT avoid registration is if the eSIM is from a Mexican carrier or your phone is linked to a rate plan from a telephone company. Otherwise, there shouldn’t be any problem.
If the CURP is not validated, the line will not be fully activated or will enter a grace period that ends with service suspension.
What does the law say about mobile line registration in Mexico?
The reform to the Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law, supposedly implemented to combat crimes such as extortion, establishes that all active lines in the country must be fully identified.
Start date: Mandatory registration began on January 9, 2026.
Deadline: You have until June 30, 2026, to link your existing lines.
Consequences: If you reach July 1 without having registered, your line will be suspended. You will only be able to make calls to 911; you will lose access to mobile data, SMS, and conventional outgoing calls.
Advantages and disadvantages of using eSIM
Using this technology has benefits, but anonymity is not one of them:
Advantages: Greater physical security (if your phone is stolen, the SIM card cannot be removed to use your WhatsApp elsewhere) and the ease of subscribing to plans through official apps.
Disadvantages: Not all phones in Mexico are compatible, especially mid-range and low-end models. Furthermore, the process of “recovering” your line if you change devices is now more stringent, as it requires going through the identity verification process again as required by law.
