San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, was awarded the Golden Broom, a prestigious international prize that recognizes cities with best practices in urban cleaning. This recognition, which will be presented on June 10 in Madrid, highlights the joint effort between authorities and citizens to keep the city clean and strengthen civic culture in the efficient management of waste.
During an interview, the mayor emphasized that this achievement is not solely due to public policies, but also to the shared effort between municipal workers and citizens. “This recognition belongs to everyone, because keeping the city clean is a collective task,” he stated.
The mayor especially underscored the work of the sanitation staff, whom he described as key to the result. “We have a team that works day and night, even on holidays. They are committed men and women who set an example every day,” he said.
He also acknowledged that the participation of the residents has been crucial. “The people of San Miguel have understood that cleanliness is also a civic responsibility. This awareness is what allows us to stand out internationally,” he added.
The award, known as the Golden Broom, is given to cities that implement efficient strategies in waste management, urban maintenance, and civic culture. In this regard, the mayor recalled that the municipality has promoted various initiatives for more than a decade to strengthen the city’s image and environmental stewardship.
Although the recognition puts San Miguel de Allende on the international map in terms of cleanliness, local authorities agree that the challenge will be maintaining these standards in the long term. “Beyond the award, the important thing is to sustain this level and continue improving,” the mayor concluded.
