Panic gripped passengers on a public transport van yesterday morning when the Urvan they were traveling in suffered a severe structural failure. The side door completely detached while the van was in motion, nearly sending the occupants tumbling onto the pavement.
According to reports, the Nissan van had just finished its route in the ACIM neighborhood and was heading back to its depot. Suddenly, the mechanism holding the door in place gave way, causing the heavy metal panel to tear off.
“There was a loud crack, and then suddenly the door was gone. If someone had been leaning against it, or if the van had taken a curve at higher speed, it would have been a tragedy,” recounted a witness.
Despite the dramatic nature of the incident, no injuries or falls were reported. The driver reacted immediately and stopped the van upon noticing the door lying on the asphalt. The incident reignited criticism of the state of public transportation in the metropolitan area.
Residents and frequent users of the Umán-Mérida route expressed their dissatisfaction, stating that authorities and concessionaires need to increase oversight of the vehicles providing this service.
According to testimonies, many buses are over the legal age limit and have visible deficiencies, such as worn tires, deteriorated seats, and constant mechanical problems. “These are old buses that are never maintained,” complained residents of the area.
