Measles outbreak spreads in Yucatán; 37 cases confirmed

The Federal Ministry of Health revealed that measles cases in Yucatán continue to rise, with 37 confirmed cases by the end of April.

Nationwide, there are 5,000 accumulated cases and 36 deaths from the disease.

In this regard, the state Secretary of Health, Alberto Alcocer Gamboa, pointed out that infections are concentrated primarily among adults—up to 49 years old—a pattern that coincides with the vaccination gap detected nationwide among young people and adults who have not completed their vaccination schedules.

He indicated that in Yucatán, transmission has been concentrated in five municipalities: Mérida, Kanasín, Valladolid, Umán, and Izamal, areas with high mobility and population density where epidemiological containment measures are being implemented to break chains of transmission.

The good news is that the state remains without any deaths, unlike the national situation where fatalities—concentrated mainly among children—have kept the health alert active.

The Yucatan Health Secretariat indicates that the containment of the disease is due to the intense vaccination campaign; however, it insisted that it is necessary to go to the vaccination centers to completely stop the transmission.
