Four farmers were murdered in Campeche to steal their Sembrando Vida (Sowing Life) program benefits.

Four farmers from the community of Nuevo Refugio in the municipality of Calakmul, in southern Campeche state, were shot and killed, allegedly to steal their benefits from the “Sembrando Vida” (Sowing Life) program.

The Secretariat of Citizen Protection and Security confirmed that the incident occurred at kilometer 17 of the Zoh Laguna-Nuevo Refugio highway in the municipality of Calakmul, where a white vehicle was found with several people suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police reported finding four people inside and outside the vehicle at the scene. Emergency services were called, but paramedics confirmed that the victims were already deceased.

The victims, residents of the community of El Refugio, were identified as Gerardo Canul Zetina (the driver), 53; Juan Antonio de la Cruz Rodríguez, 34; Ángela Rodríguez, 53; and Arcadio Rodríguez Quiñones, 58.

According to witnesses, the farmers left their ejido around 1:00 a.m. this Friday to collect their payments from the federal program “Sembrando Vida” (Sowing Life). They were also carrying cards belonging to other residents of their community to withdraw the funds and give them to them upon their return; however, the amount they were carrying is unknown.

Although the police cordoned off the site of the multiple homicide, there are no reports of arrests or any leads as to who committed the massacre.

La Policía reportó que en el lugar de los hechos encontraron cuatro personas al exterior y al interior de la unidad y se solicitó el apoyo de servicios de emergencia, sin embargo los paramédicos confirmaron que las personas ya se encontraban sin vida.
