IHG Hotels & Resorts solidified its progress in Mexico, Latin America, and the Caribbean by adding more than 4,000 rooms in the last year, through a strategy that combines organic expansion, conversions, and alliances.
The company reports a portfolio of nearly 400 properties, both operated and under development, in the region, with a presence in urban, beach, and business destinations. Mexico remains its fifth largest market globally and one of its main growth drivers, along with the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Peru.
This dynamism is driven by sustained demand in segments ranging from midscale to luxury. According to Jolyon Bulley, CEO for the Americas, the region offers favorable conditions for accelerating growth in the coming years, leveraging relationships with property owners and brand diversification.
In Mexico, the strategy includes new openings in locations with both corporate and tourism activity. Among these is Garner Mazatlán Beach, which introduces the chain’s midscale conversion brand to the country. In Mexico City, the Holiday Inn Express Condesa targets business travelers with its location on the Insurgentes-Reforma corridor. In leisure destinations, the Hotel Indigo Playa del Carmen strengthens the group’s presence in the Mexican Caribbean with a design focused on the local experience.
Upcoming projects include the InterContinental Miyana and Kimpton El Castelar, as well as new acquisitions for brands such as Hotel Indigo and voco in Mexico City. In the Caribbean, the company is preparing its arrival in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.
The combination of formats—from extended stays to resorts—reflects an adjustment to more segmented travel patterns. For the company, the challenge is not only to increase the number of rooms but also to capture demand from different traveler profiles in a region where tourism activity remains strong.
In November IHG opened the Crowne Plaza Mérida hotel, with 136 rooms, ranging from panoramic suites to standard rooms. This hotel is part of the city’s architectural heritage and has been remodeled and updated for this new stage in its history, located in the financial district on Paseo Montejo, a few minutes from the historic center and the international airport.
